When Jeffrey first arrived at MAX, his self-confidence was low as he had low reading and writing skills, in addition to having a heart condition (Ischaemic Heart Disease).
When it came to Jeffrey’s employment choices, he preferred a more hands-on role due to his low literacy skills.
Job Coach Simon Page identified that Jeffrey would benefit greatly from expanding his industry preference by attaining a Forklift licence, Traffic Control licence and White Card.
During the courses, Simon and other team members took turns to sit with Jeffrey to support him with writing.
To build his communication skills, Jeffrey spent weekly sessions working in group settings. The MAX team also coached Jeffrey with interview skills and skills required to work in a team environment.
Simon worked closely with Jeffrey to identify the right role for him. For Jeffrey, his heart condition meant that he could work no more than 12 hours a week.
When Jeffrey was ready, Simon reached out to the manager at Mitre 10, and informed them of Jeffrey’s strengths as well as his need to work short shifts due to his heart condition. Rather than organising an interview and sending Jeffrey along , Simon went with Jeffrey to the interview.
This simple act of support helped Jeffrey to speak with confidence at the interview, securing himself a job!
The support didn’t end there, though! Simon was also there on Jeffrey’s first day to assist him with completing all the online induction required for his new role.
Jeffrey is proud of his achievements and his whole family is supportive of how far along he has come. In fact, Jeffrey (right) is pictured here with Simon (left) on the day he received his uniform two weeks into employment at Mitre 10!
