What job should I do?

We spend a lot of our life at work so it’s understandable you want to make sure your job suits you.

Balancing the skills you have, what you want to develop, what you enjoy, and what you don’t, can be tricky.

Career quizzes can be a great way to give you an insight or inspiration on what job you should do.

Whether you are about to leave school, returning from work from a long break, or just searching for a career change, if you want help finding out which jobs suit you, read on.

What is a career quiz?

A career quiz is a set of questions that can help define career paths that might suit you. They can do this in a few different ways.

Some simpler quizzes only ask several broad questions to get you started on thinking about your future.

Your Future Career pairs your interests with working conditions that don’t suit you as well as some industries you might be interested in.

You can also add in your work and volunteer experience and qualifications to help make the results more relevant to you.

It will then give you a range of career paths based on your answers which will detail the skills you need, the pay, and other jobs that are similar.

You could also try the StudyAustralia job quiz. This career quiz takes a more in-depth look at your personality and how you see yourself.

Once you have completed the career quiz there is a report that provides multiple recommendations of potential industries and the occupations within those industries that could be a great fit for you.

It also provides insight into your personality and how that can impact the jobs that may or may not fit you.

How else can I work out what job I should do?

Career quizzes are great, but they only give an idea of what may be right for your unique situation. It’s best to use them as a starting point but combined with the following you can develop a plan to get your dream job.

Learn about yourself

Personality quizzes like 16personalities can be very detailed and take a little bit of time to complete.

But the insight they provide into your strengths and weaknesses makes them well worth doing.

There are many similar tests to this such as Myers Briggs, DiSC and the Big Five. They all use different approaches but the underlying principle is the same, to reflect on your personality, behaviour and attitude to understand how you work with others.

Having a better understanding of what makes you, you will help you make better, more informed choices when it comes to your career.

Talk to a Job Coach

If you are a MAX customer, you have the benefit of a Job Coach. A Job Coach will work with you to develop a plan based on your strengths and goals to find a job that’s right for you.

They have an understanding of the local job market and will be able to guide and support you towards a job that fits with what you’d like to do.

Your network

Family, friends, and co-workers have all seen sides of you and could have surprising insights that you may not have considered.

Share your results from the career quiz with them and have a chat. Their advice may not always be what you want to hear but the more discussion you have, the more clarity you will have in the direction you decide to go.

Talk to HR/careers counsellor

If you are in a job and looking to develop your career, talking with HR and how you can build skills to work towards your dream role is a good idea.

You may be eligible for education funding if you want to undertake study, or the company may offer its own training opportunities.

Being proactive like this will also put you front of mind when job openings come up.

If you are still in school, you will generally have a careers counsellor available that will do the same thing.

They may also be able to recommend certificate courses you can do while you are still at school that can fast track you into your chosen field after graduation!
