ParentsNext helps young mum look to the future

Building connection, hope and a plan with her ParentsNext job coach has allowed Rebecca* to look to the future. While her priority remains supporting her young son, she is now studying and getting ready to start a new career. 

When Rebecca joined the ParentsNext community in Woy Woy, she was struggling with life with a newborn son.

Like many young mums Rebecca felt isolated and was struggling with depression. 

While she wasn’t against returning to work, her social confidence was low and her mental health challenges meant she struggled to see what the future might hold, beyond caring for her little boy.

Rebecca’s ParentsNext Job Coach, Kelly, scheduled regular appointments to help build their relationship and provide a space for Rebecca to feel connected within the local community.

Kelly also connected Rebecca with a range of local support services designed to help her manage her mental health and grow her confidence. 

During their chats, with Rebecca’s baby playing nearby, Kelly uncovered Rebecca’s interest in fitness, health and safety.

Together they explored different courses that might upskill Rebecca and lead to a career she would enjoy long term.

“Seeing Rebecca’s face light up when I told her how ParentsNext could help support her is the reason I love this program!” shares Kelly. 

Rebecca ultimately settled on a Certificate IV in Workplace Health and Safety offered online through TAFE.

“Rebecca started her course and was working hard when her laptop stopped working,” shares Kelly. 

“Through the funds available to ParentsNext participants, I was able to arrange to help Rebecca purchase a new laptop and ensure she could continue studying,” says Kelly. 

“My time in ParentsNext has been a positive and progressive stepping stone in my life as a mother and thinking about my future, in studies towards my career, and support for my Indigenous son,” shares Rebecca. 

Rebecca’s progress has been immense in just seven months since joining ParentsNext. As she looks to complete her studies and begin a career in workplace health and safety, Rebecca’s future looks bright with her son by her side.

The ParentsNext program is a service focused on supporting parents as they prepare for employment. The program is available to parents with children under 6 who receive a Parenting Payment. It is designed to help parents like Rebecca to achieve their study and work goals.
