Waleed’s Inspiring Journey with MAX’s AMEP Program

This is Waleed, a resilient Kurdish refugee who, driven by the pursuit of safety and a brighter future, journeyed from Iraq to Australia – a land steeped in unfamiliar culture and language. 

Waleed’s story is a testament to the transformative power of language and support, made possible by MAX’s Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP). He overcame linguistic barriers, crediting his remarkable success with the exceptional trainers who guided him.

Through learning English, Waleed was able to connect to the broader Australian community and the organisations that aided his integration. 

Highlights of Waleed’s AMEP journey include an inspiring visit to Wollongong University, where he connected with individuals from different cultures.

His accomplishments also include being recognised as one of the winners of a refugee history competition organised by AMEP – an achievement that reflects his resilience and dedication.

When asked to define “peace”, Waleed’s perspective is profound. To him, peace means having rights, the freedom to express oneself, and the fundamental respect afforded to every human being.

In Australia, he has found a welcoming and friendly community that has helped him forge a profound sense of peace and belonging in his new home. 

Waleed’s advice to fellow individuals navigating similar displacement journeys is simple yet powerful: learn English. It’s a key that unlocks improved communication and, consequently, better employment opportunities – a path he knows firsthand.
