Did you know that one in five Australians are affected by mental illness every year? Many more people have been impacted by the current COVID-19 pandemic, and the increased uncertainty and anxiety that has been present during the last six months.
On World Mental Health Day 2020, Mental Health Australia encourages everyone to make a promise to look after their mental health.
Plan an enjoyable activity – It’s important not to lose touch with things that give us pleasure. Plan to do some fun activities this week that make you feel joyful. For example, watch a comedy, take a relaxing bath, spend time in nature or eat your favourite foods.
Connect with others – Find ways to connect with your friends and family. For those who are physically isolated, it’s easy to become disconnected. Organise phone and video calls or do something nice for them.
Practice mindfulness – Mindfulness is about learning to focus our awareness on the present moment. This can help you to accept your thoughts and feelings and let go of any future concerns or worries. Consider watching a video or listening to an audio clip to meditate.
Talking to a health professional can help you manage your mental and physical health.
MAX customers can access support from health professionals, starting with our Health Service Officers (HSOs).
Meeting with a HSO is a great place to start exploring mental health concerns and symptoms.
MAX customers are typically linked with health support services by their consultant.
However, recently we’ve expanded our health services and MAX customers can now request an appointment with an HSO.
HSOs can provide a range of interventions to support customers’ mental health in sessions, such as:
Setting goals to improve mental health and wellbeing
Provide education and resources on various health topics
Create a plan to increase daily activity and exercise
Learn ways to develop positive thinking and behaviours
Explore helpful coping strategies to manage stress and emotions
Learn effective ways to communicate and connect with others
Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques
Link customers to external community supports
Our blogs are about helping people seek the information that they need for their steps in the workforce.
